When is Veruzia?
Initially I tried tying Veruzia’s temporary conquest by the 0utlaws to the Republic of Ragusa’s fall, but that put the Second Veruzian war as a post-nuclear conflict, much too late to make sense. Tying the start date to the death of Blackbeard was a good idea, but that put the Second Veruzian war too close to the Napoleonic wars and too far away from the end of the 19th century to make much sense. Eventually I settled on an arbitrary date in the 1740s, pushing it back and forth a little until the official founding of the Veruzian empire lined up with the Congress of Vienna. This placed the Second Veruzian war exactly where I wanted it, adjacent to the Franco-Prussian, and left other events in reasonable timeframes as well. The only problems were the Great Roman War and the Veruzian Civil war, both events having taken place after a two year lull in real life, which translated to over a hundred in-game. I divided the time there by twelve to avoid a massive gap that would otherwise cover my preferred area of history or thrust Veruzia into the far future. Otherwise, the distance between events has been left unaltered.
The following is an abridged history of Veruzia, to be followed in a later post by an attempt to tie it back to reality, somehow.
PRE-POLYNESIAN PERIOD:
This is a nebulous time, over a decade ago by the writing of this post. Zackbacon (A.K.A WeGank) joins the server, and several months later ToxicKingRS (A.K.A KwesiYsell) joins too. KingRS is enslaved by the Iborean empire, but escapes quickly. ZackBacon and KingRS meet, and settle a small island.
POLYNESIAN PERIOD:
The two form The Polynesian Empire. WilsonManzer (A.K.A ProWil) joins the crew. The settlement of South Verussi is the arid capital of the early empire. The 0utlaws, a faction of notorious pirates, wage war against the Polynesians for a time. The Polynesians lose this conflict.
EARLY VERUZIAN EMPIRE:
The Polynesian empire falls, and a new Verussian Empire is proclaimed with KingRS as the sovereign. Verussia is within the 0utlaw’s sphere of influence, but released following a war with the British and Elven empires. A period of internal trouble follows, after which South Verussi is sacked by British renegades. The 0utlaws follow this by razing South Verussi and conquering Verussia, only for outright liberation by the British and allies shortly thereafter. The 0utlaws are then eradicated by a British coalition including Verussia.
FIRST VERUZIAN WAR:
It is at this point that I (warbluke) enter the story. I lived as a nomad during the brief few months before I joined the Verussians. While I travelled the world, tensions were rising between the Elven/British coalition and the Verussians. Friction over borders on the Verussian continent, colonized after the destruction of South Verussi, made the situation worse. Eventually a plan to ferment revolt amongst the British and Elves was leaked. Who specifically declared war depends on who you ask, but a war was declared. The Elves spearheaded the conflict over several weeks, launching raids into Verussian settlements deep within the continent. The British took a relative backseat with Naval support. Eventually Verussia surrenders, surrendering much land on the continent. Either during this conflict or shortly following it is when I joined.
COLD WAR:
Verussia attempts to create a new block of power, the Federated Nations alliance, to counter the British-helmed League of Nations. The Entarian Alliance, a sub-polity in the FNA, begins construction of a “super-weapon” to bombard enemies. The neighboring Xenon empire, who Verussia surrendered land to after the last war, spies on the developments of the FNA. This sparks an arms race of outlandish superweapons between all involved nations. The capital of Pallidavia is founded during this time, and I assist with its construction. Wilson builds “The Holodeck”, a massive seafort and manufacturing site. The Rohan riders are annexed, adding to Verussian claims on the continent.
SECOND VERUZIAN WAR:
Eventually conflict breaks out, this time with the British at the lead. The Xenon empire’s “bombardment tower”, the only completed super-weapon, obliterates much of Pallidavia during the brief conflict. The Holodeck is destroyed. The war lasts only a few days as overwhelming force brings the Verussian Empire to its knees. KingRS is forced to resign as emperor, and the Verussian Empire becomes the Verussian Republic as part of the peace treaty. WilsonManzer is placed in charge, and more land is surrendered on the continent. The Verussian alliance system failed to bring in any significant assistance on the Verussian side, partially due to Verussian “diplomacy” self-sabotaging our global reputation.
VERUZIAN MIGRATION PERIOD:
I leave Pallidavia, not pleased with being bombarded for several real-life hours straight with no recourse. The settlement I go on to create will eventually become known as “New Pallidavia” several years down the line. The devastation and loss of land on the Verussian continent means others follow, eventually giving up the whole island-continent to the Xenon Empire after a formal treaty. The Rohan Riders are released. The cities of Charbeyliene and Elysium are settled in the new heartland of Verussia. This period lasted several real-life years, unlike the earlier ones which lasted months at most.
GREAT ROMAN WAR:
Verussia becomes involved with a civil war between several crews styling themselves after Rome. Siding with the SPQR, and the British, against the rebellious forces of ROME, the Elves, and the Italian mafia, Verussia once again loses a serverwide war. This time Charbeyliene is sacked twice, with bloody fights along roadways near the Verussian-ROME border. Zackbacon betrays Verussia during this conflict, leading to massive casualties at the second siege of Charbeyliene. The conflict ends when ROME is granted independence. Verussia is less physically damaged than it had been in the previous two wars, but the human cost was much higher. The Elves collapse following this conflict. PortugalJ joins at some point.
VERUZIAN CIVIL WAR:
Hurt in pride and manpower, but not infrastructure, Verussia finally lapses into a brief civil war when WilsonManzer loses an election to former emperor KingRS. The war is relatively bloodless, but it leaves vast swathes of Verussian cities untouchable due to competing land claims after Wilson leaves to join PAPAL. PortugalJ collapses mentally and is banned. KingRS goes out to live a normal life in the real world. I find myself alone. Well, alone on a specific Minecraft server, let’s not get too dramatic here.
InventorEric, OdinGrungir, Atalantaa, and several others are very important to this story, moreso than myself, but it is difficult to determine their exact chronology and contributions. I could reach out to any of the individuals mentioned in this story, but trying to explain exactly what I am attempting here (turning ten years on a Minecraft server into the history of a fake-real nation to wargame with) would be awkward. At the end of the day this is a personal project, and I will do with it what I want.
What I will be doing next time is explaining the real world date column on my chart, and what it means for the history of Verussia.
